“If you do an at-home nutrition test and get a result, you might say, ‘Hey, I want to go eat these foods to potentially even it out.’ But you could be going in the wrong direction,” he said. “This is why we have dietitians, experts in the field.”

Whether your insurance will cover at-home vitamin deficiency tests depends on several factors, but most insurance companies won’t cover a test for vitamin deficiency, especially if it wasn’t ordered by a healthcare professional.

That being said, if a doctor orders the test as part of a medical evaluation, it’s possible that some or all of the costs may be covered. You may also be able to use an FSA or HSA to pay for these tests.

To increase the chances of coverage, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional and contact your insurance company directly before taking a vitamin deficiency test at home.
